Prophylaxis – Cleanings

A prophylaxis cleaning is a cleaning that is typically performed every 6 months by your dental hygienist to thoroughly clean your teeth. Our specially trained hygienists remove all hard plaque (calculus) before polishing your teeth with a special paste to enhance and improve your teeth. This cleaning helps keep your mouth in a healthy state and also prevents the progression of gum disease.

What are the benefits of a prophylaxis cleaning?

Removing Calculus

Over time, our teeth collect calculus, which is hardened plaque, even when we are brushing our teeth regularly. This is not uncommon even for patients with perfect dental hygiene. Because of this, prophylaxis cleanings are essential for removing that calculus that can hold bacteria and cause cavities and gum disease. Regular cleanings remove this calculus helping to eliminate areas for decay to form.

Whiter Smile

Plaque and calculus all have a yellowish appearance and can cause your smile to yellow. Getting a prophylaxis cleaning can rid your mouth of the plaque and calculus allowing for a whiter, healthier smile.

Fresher Breath

Regular cleanings are a great investment not only for your teeth but also for your overall health. Regular dental cleanings remove calculus and decrease the bacteria count in your mouth, resulting in healthier gums and prevention of halitosis. Halitosis is otherwise known as bad breath, which is caused by the bacteria in your mouth. Identification of health risks

Often times, health issues can be identified long before they are serious. During your prophylaxis cleaning, you will also receive a thorough, comprehensive exam where Dr. Pollack will examine your entire oral cavity and look for any signs of other health risks. Recommendations can also be made regarding your nutrition and home care regimen to ensure a healthier, overall better you!
